The city of Port-Harcourt, capital of Rivers State in Southern Nigeria

The city of Port-Harcourt, capital of Rivers State in Southern Nigeria, was originally called Iguocha, an Ikwerre dialect of the Igbo word "Ụ́gwụ́ Ọ́chá".

In 1913, Lord Frederick Lugard named it Port-Harcourt (Port of Lord Harcourt) after, Secretary of State for the colonies, Lord Lewis Vernon Harcourt MP (1863-1922).

The main purpose of Port-Harcourt was to export the coal discovered in Enugu, in 1909, to the United Kingdom.
