Following the breaking out of the fire on Sunday morning, USS Bonhomme Richard – a ship at the San Diego Naval Base – is still burning. USS Bonhomme Richard is an amphibious assault ship. After the incident, it has witnessed federal and Navy firefighters join hands in order to tackle the fire, but it continues to rage on.
As of 3:30 pm Pacific time July 13, a total of 59 persons, including 23 civilians and 36 sailors, had been treated for minor injuries without the need for hospitalization. The Naval Surface Forces tweeted this information. However, the Navy is really determined to save the ship from the looming doom.
Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck, commander of Expeditionary Strike Group Three, said during a press conference on Monday, ‘We’ve been at it for over 24 hours now, and we’re going to get it until it’s done.’ The ship was undergoing maintenance when the incident took place. The cause of the fire is still unknown. We really hope that the Navy is able to bring the situation under control as soon as possible.
