The Brave pigeon, Cher Ami managed to save 194 American soldiers despite being shot at by German soldiers.
During the closing stages of World War One in October 1918, a pigeon, Cher Ami managed to save 194 American soldiers despite being shot at by German soldiers.
Cher Ami bravely delivered a vital message from the soldiers who had been cut off behind enemy lines as she endured hostile fires by the Germans.
She was shot through the breast, blinded in one eye, and had a leg hanging only by a tendon. Army medics worked to save her life but were unable to save her leg, so they carved a small wooden one for her.
Cher Ami was awarded the Croix de Guerre Medal with a palm Oak Leaf Cluster for her bravery in delivering 12 important messages during the War.
